On The Island: Texas Beach Party

Galveston Island is battening down the hatches in preparation for the annoying annual Texas Beach Party also known as KAPPA Weekend.

Thousands of mostly African American young people will swarm the Seawall in an endless parade of barely dressed girls, jacked up cars and boys with video cameras.

Even more annoying than the loud beat of thousands of overblown speakers blasting HipHop all over the Island, is the city blocking off nearly every street with the exception of the major arteries.

Many businesses close because workers can not travel around the Island to get to work.

Even 7 miles away our little neighborhood will be barracaded (photo) due to the traffic backing up this far in previous years.

Every year the city tries to lure the party out to East Beach.
The turnout is usually light out there, the main venue clearly being Seawall Blvd.
After the party there is a big expensive mess to clean up, but the city does a good job of putting things back together quickly. Summer has arrived.
